Marlene Uldschmidt studied architecture at Hawk University of Applied Science and Arts, Faculty of Architecture, Engineering and Conservation. For several years she specialized in conservation projects in Germany. Marlene Uldschmidt Architects was founded in Ferragudo Algarve in 2005. Marlene is a member of Architektenkammer Germany, Association of Architects Portugal, Royal Institute of British Architects RIBA.
Marlene grew up in a medieval walled town in Germany, where almost anything and everything was made by local craftsmen. Her family circle consisted of a milliner, restorative painter, saddler, seamstress and a neighbouring blacksmith. Time spent at Werkbund Werkstatt Nuernberg gave Marlene experience of working with various materials and their potential applications. Today, earlier recollections of watching artisans at work are an important element in her approach to architecture.
The studio believes that architecture and design should be in context with the habitat, topography and heritage of the location of the site. A balance between architecture, landscape and people is central to each project. Our imaginative concepts combine natural materials and contemporary design to create volumes of light and space. The use of local craftsmen and materials are also an integral part of the design journey.
The studio works on a range of challenging and diverse projects and our flexible and open minded approach delivers elegant and exciting solutions for our clients. The team is made up of Marlene and a group of young dynamic Portuguese architects as well as regular interns.
