3rd Educational Building Wageningen University and Research

3rd Educational Building Wageningen University and Research

One thing is certain: No one knows how future education will look like. How can we design a building which can facilitate this uncertainty? LIAG developed a design for The 3rd Educational Building which can be built in three phases – after implementation of each phase the building will always be functionally and aesthetically complete. There is also a possibility to realize smaller extensions in between the main three phases enabling the Wageningen University to respond to an ever-changing number of students in the future.
The 3rd Educational Building has a modular and open structure and is flexible in every way. Lecture halls can be combined to make room for larger groups of up to 450 people. The laboratories can be combined into smaller and larger rooms always meeting the actual educational needs. In the future lecture halls can also be turned into laboratories.
The building offers various educational and study spaces where students and teachers come together for
mutual inspiration, cooperation and social contact. The study spaces are clustered around the central atrium where also a food market can be found on the ground floor. Green terraces line the atrium from where there is also a nice view towards the rest of the campus.
LIAG took inspiration in the three core areas of Wageningen University and Research; Food and Food
production, Living Environment and Health, Lifestyle and Livelihood. We translated the WUR motto “To
explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life” into a super sustainable and healthy building
which exhibits the activities and research areas of students, teachers and professors. An open and transparent building with a logical layout where people easily meet up and where interaction is stimulated.
