Project Description
Light and simplicity define the refurbishment of the BMW (South Africa) Head Office. Conceptually, the design focuses on revitalising an architecturally iconic structure – maintaining the spirit of the original Hans Hallen design, while infusing the exterior with the life of a new entity, implementing energy efficiency and sustainability principles, as well as BMW’s “neue Arbeitswelten” (new working environments).
The inner façade, in contrast to the minimal intervention on the outer façade, was stripped and extended into the courtyard. The fully-glazed façade allows increased natural light and visual connections, efficient circulation and improved levels of comfort. Dynamic use of solar-tracking louvres enhances the transparency and seamless flow further.
Reinventing the lighting, ventilation, hot water supply and back-up solutions required the construction of a satellite Energy Centre.
The building achieved the 5-star ‘As Built’ GSSA (Green Star South Africa) rating and embodies the established principles of the BMW brand.
