The Glass Cabin raises above the Midwestern prairie in a clearing next to the Wapsipnicon River in Northeast Iowa, USA. Designed and built by the architect, Steven Risting of atelierRISTING. Reclaimed glass, a regenerated prairie, and natural materials were the genesis of the design. The 1,008 square foot off-grid family retreat features a great room, two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, a screened-in porch and three outdoor terraces. The use of Western Red Cedar for the interior and exterior structure, siding and decking was selected for its natural moisture-resistance, insect-resistance, fire-resistance, acoustical properties and is a renewable resource…and it smells great! Built for occasional use, the exterior barn doors close for security and blends the structure into its agricultural surroundings.
