Project Description

The Supplementary pension fund of the Municipal supply association of Saxony – ZVK des KVS – constructed an office centre with underground parking lot attached to the existing building at the crossroad of Holbeinstraße and Marschnerstraße. The extension was built as a punctuated reinforced concrete façade. With a stepped storey it has the same height as the adjacent building part. A four-story linking block, mainly glazed, is a functional and spatial connection between two building structures, producing a fascinating contrast to the light beige natural stone cladding of the both volumes. The constant rhythm of the narrow windows gives the façade its structure: it results from the 1.35 m office axis, which allows a high flexibility of the floor plan. Additionally the architects lend more liveliness to the appearance by varying the width of the windows. With its modest colour combination the extension harmonize with the existing construction subordinating to the red corner building. A curtain façade of natural stone with rear ventilation was chosen based on the client’s wish to have a durable and rather low-maintenance surface.
