Neubau Atelier Durrer

Neubau Atelier Durrer

Project Description

In the district Altenberg, on the best sunny location and direct view on the Old City of Bern, is the new two-storey, made in wood structure building. The task was to design a residential studio for musicians and producers. The peculiarity was that a spatial organization had to be found, which is currently considered recording studio and can be converted at a later date to an independent dwelling unit. This resulted in planning an interplay of two usages which had to take place under one roof. The free plot situated directly next to the old building is recorded with a clear and simple building in wood construction, standing on a stepped concrete base. This follows from the terracing typical local topography, which is divided by means of retaining walls to the river direction. So also divide the rooms on a half – and full floors and are outside of the concrete base to read.
The tricky slope in the „Aaretalschutzgebiet“ and the asset worth protecting for street and city images demanded an extremely respectful of the existing vegetation. Thus, the building was accurately placed between the existing plants that you could get all the trees and the spacious grounds was preserved.
The address of the building is on the north side. About a folded plate staircase one enters the building. The interior stairs along the north facade leads to the upper floor, a few steps down leads to the single-storey main room. This is glazed with generous lifting sliding windows to the garden and can be opened in a corner. So, exterior – and interior becomes to an expanded space continuum. The vertical fine-grained larch wood facade is on the interaction of spruce and fruit tree and divided calmly into the built structure. A skylight upstairs allows you to experience the trees in the interior. Direct views of Berner Munster and the Alps, can also be seen on the upper floor.
