Modernization of the staircase in the 19th century building is based on evoking associations with the old character of the building, but through the use of modern solutions.
Original elements of staircases were stucco work, decorative framing, railings, etc. – accounted for a coherent look of staircases. As a result of successive „reconstructions“ – these spaces have lost their original character. Nowadays, they are fusion of random elements: gas pipes, internet cables, security doors, etc.
Most changes is irreversible, so as for this project was decided not to restore the original state – but to reconcile all the elements as a coherent space. The rule, it was assumed to use gray color to uniform all elements. The space became a background for mirrors which historicizing and creating a „virtual space“ – unreal by affecting its „physicality“ – changing ceiling, walls and floors by creation of surprising views and reflections.
