Extension Building Uniklinik RWTH Aachen

The Uniklinik RWTH Aachen, one of Europe’s largest hospital buildings and listed as a historical monument and as a representative of the „Technical Modernity“ is to be expanded including a new central surgery area and an entrance foyer.
The 14,000 m² area will include 31 operating rooms, 4 operating rooms for teaching and research purposes, 3 intensive care units (50 beds), anesthesia and premedication, medical laboratories, a day clinic, the bed preparation and training rooms for human resources.
The design by PL Architects reacts with a modular landscape structure to the existing building and integrated into the current green belt. The interaction of useful architecture and an organically designed landscape serves as a motive for landscaping.
The entrance foyer with the patient admissions point and service facilities is subordinate to the existing solitaire to keeps the view of the famous monument free because of the small volume and transparent design. For the Europe-wide competition, thirteen well-known offices were admitted and PL Architects were proud to reach
third place in this competition.
